Surabhi Chayan Shrankhala
The Surabhi Chayan Shrankhala is a national programme of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India aimed at identifying and selecting high-producing indigenous cattle and buffaloes for genetic improvement of the livestock population. The programme is implemented as part of the digital livestock ecosystem developed under the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM).
The initiative focuses on systematic performance recording of milch animals, particularly with respect to milk production and other productivity parameters. The collected data is uploaded on the Bharat Pashudhan digital platform, enabling centralized monitoring and analysis.
Objectives
The primary objective of the programme is to identify elite milch animals with superior production potential and promote their use in breeding programmes. Through scientific selection of such animals, the programme seeks to improve the genetic quality and productivity of cattle and buffalo populations in the country.
Performance Recording
Under Surabhi Chayan Shrankhala, selected animals are monitored through regular recording of milk yield and other relevant production parameters. Field veterinarians and trained personnel collect the data, which is then uploaded to the NDLM digital database for analysis and record maintenance.
Identification of Elite Animals
Based on the recorded performance data, high-yielding animals with desirable genetic characteristics are identified as elite animals. These animals become valuable sources of superior germplasm and can be utilized in breeding programmes such as artificial insemination and selective breeding.
Till now out of 5020 target, 4447 elite animals have been identified and uploaded on Bharat Pashudhan portal.
Significance
Surabhi Chayan Shrankhala represents an important step towards scientific breed improvement and conservation of indigenous livestock breeds. By identifying and promoting genetically superior animals, the programme contributes to enhanced milk productivity, strengthening of indigenous breeds, and sustainable growth of the dairy sector in India.
