Quality frozen semen is the critical input for Bovine breeding. As per the field requirement, the semen production schedule is being planned and the shortfall in the production level was bridged by procuring good-quality crossbred and buffalo frozen semen from leading organizations of our country.
Frozen Semen Bank, Khapuria, Cuttack
The Frozen Semen Bank (FSB), Cuttack, established in the year 1978, is the only semen producing station of the State, supplying frozen semen straws to all the 30 Districts. It has a total area of 7.85 acres. FSB is being strengthened under the State Sector Scheme Strengthening Dairy Organisation (SDO) and Central Sponsored Scheme (RGM) for the production of quality frozen semen. Further, 5 nos. of Imported Jersey bulls from Denmark, 5 nos. of HF bulls from Germany, along with and 03 high genetic merit pure Jersey bulls from Paschimabanga Gosampada Bikasha Sanstha are available now at FSB, Cuttack, and used for semen collection.
Frozen Semen Bank (FSB), Cuttack, is ISO 9001:2015 certified and was given a “B” grade by Central Monitoring Unit 2022-23, DAHD. Frozen Semen Training Institute under FSB, Cuttack, is also accredited by DAHD. FSB has produced 2 lakh semen straws during the year 2025-26 to be used for artificial insemination.

BULL STATION
FSB is being strengthened under SDO & RGM for production of quality frozen semen. 5 nos. of bull sheds having single pen accommodation for 110 bulls are available with a separate isolation and quarantine shed facility. At present, 111 bulls of twelve categories are maintained as detailed below. Bulls are strictly maintained as per the MSP prescribed by the GOI. The bulls are half-yearly screened for diseases like BVD, IBR, TB, JD, Brucellosis, Campylobacteriosis, and Trichomoniasis by RDDL, Kolkata. Karyotyping and GEBV estimation of all bulls have been done by NDDB. Testing against genetic diseases like BLAD, Citrullinemia, Factor – XI, and DUMPS for all crossbred bulls has also been done at NDDB.
QUALITY CONTROL LABORATORY
All quality control tests, like Post Thaw motility, HOS Test, Incubation Test, Acrosome Integrity, Microbial load, Sperm morphology, etc. are conducted regularly as per the MSP of the Government of India so that the processed straws pass the QC test for further use in the field.
