  1. Reliable Milk Production

While prized for their work, they are also fairly good milkers. Superior animals can produce up to 3 liters of milk per day, providing essential nutrition and income for rural households.

  1. Artisan Heritage

Beyond the field and the pail, the Kalahandi cattle contribute to local art. Their long, sturdy horns are traditionally harvested (post-life) to create beautiful handicrafts and essential household items, supporting local artisans.

 Lifecycle & Development

  • Age at Maturity: 34–36 months.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance breed with natural resistance to local climate fluctuations.

 Why the Kalahandi Breed Matters

The Kalahandi cattle represent a perfect balance of utility and resilience. By providing long-term draft power, consistent milk, and raw materials for local crafts, they remain an irreplaceable asset for the socio-economic development of Western Odisha.

“The Kalahandi breed is a marathon runner among cattle—providing years of loyal service and sustaining the traditional crafts of the soil.”
