Goat Artificial Insemination Programme
Goat Development and Scientific Breeding through Goat-AI
The Goat Artificial Insemination (AI) Programme is a livestock development initiative implemented by the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department, Odisha to improve the genetic potential and productivity of goats in the state. The programme promotes the use of scientific breeding techniques, particularly artificial insemination using frozen semen from superior breeds.
Under this programme, artificial insemination services are provided to female goats (does) using frozen semen of superior breeds such as Black Bengal and Ganjam goats, which are well suited to the agro-climatic conditions of Odisha. The initiative aims to gradually upgrade the genetic quality of local goat populations and enhance meat production.

- Genetic improvement of the goat population
- Enhancement of meat production and productivity
- Promotion of scientific breeding practices
- Improvement of livelihood opportunities for rural farmers
The programme aims to cover approximately 1.5 lakh female goats under artificial insemination services.
Implementation
To facilitate service delivery, a network of Goat Artificial Insemination Centres has been established across the state. A total of 565 centres have been planned, out of which around 300 centres are currently operational.
Veterinarians and paraveterinary personnel have been trained to carry out the procedures and to promote awareness among farmers regarding scientific goat breeding practices.
