 Breed Utility & Special Qualities

  1. Expert Draft Animals

Despite their small size, Motu cattle are highly valued for their agility and strength. Their low center of gravity and short legs make them the perfect choice for plowing and transport in the undulating, hilly terrains where larger breeds struggle.

  1. Tribal Heritage & Sustainable Rearing

The Koya tribes rear these animals in a traditional, low-input system. The Motu breed’s ability to survive on local forest forage and its natural resistance to tropical diseases make it a “zero-cost” asset for rural livelihoods.

  1. Physical Posture

The breed is noted for its good posture and balanced frame, which contributes to its long working life and endurance in the field.

 Conservation Significance

As an indigenous breed managed by tribal communities, the Motu cattle represent a vital genetic reservoir. Their adaptation to the specific agro-climatic zone of Malkangiri makes them irreplaceable for sustainable agriculture in the region.

“The Motu breed is a symbol of the Koya tribe’s harmony with nature—a compact powerhouse that sustains the remote hills of Odisha.”
